CHAPTER 11

XENON

As I watched the human drone fully healed before me, looking almost pensive in his soulless state, my blood boiled with the urge to tear him limb from limb. That vermin had put my mate and my crew in jeopardy. But no matter how much I could hack away at him, there would be no destroying that abomination. We needed to incinerate it.

I turned to my mate, who had finished stabilizing the Shell and was launching a full scan on Legion’s first one. Kate had kicked ass and displayed a stoicism in combat that commanded respect. And yet, I just wanted to take her away from this trashed room and examine every inch of her body to make sure she hadn’t sustained any damage.

“Are you okay?” I asked her while shifting out of my battle form.

She smiled and nodded. “I’m good. But I need to go check on Kazumi. The other Tegorian struck her during the fight.”

My stomach knotted. I, too, had involuntarily struck Kazumi in the base while trying to kill myself so that I would be free of that bad Shell. Fighting the urge to draw Kate into my embrace and silencing my irrational need of keeping her close, I merely nodded.

“I will tag along to bring the human and the other Tegorian back to the brig,” I offered. She gave me a grateful smile. On our way out, I cast a glance at Tremak. “Thanks for your help.”

“To kill baddies? Anytime, friend.”

I snorted and shook my head before exiting the Infirmary with my mate after she grabbed her medical kit. That Scelk was definitely growing on me.

“Ayana says they haven’t sustained any injuries either, but that the armory, its hallway, and part of the engine room got roughed up,” Kate said in a light tone.

“That’s good to hear,” I replied sincerely, but a different subject burned my tongue. “I did not free them.”

Kate recoiled. Stopping dead in her tracks, she turned to look at me, eyes wide with shock, and what I believed to be a hint of shame. “I know. I didn’t say that, nor has anyone else implied it.”

“You didn’t say it, but you thought it,” I challenged. “I felt your doubt through the psychic group. Plus, you’re not the only one who thought it.”

She didn’t argue or try to deny it. She merely held my gaze and shrugged. “You’re right. The thought did cross my mind. The prisoners, the drones, and the Kryptids were properly secured, with no tools that would allow them to escape. That only left external help. The only new element in our team that could represent such a risk is you. You also happened to be awake just moments before the attack began.”

My chest constricted as she spoke, but I couldn’t deny the logic of her words. I didn’t know what reaction I had expected from Kate, but the honest way she handled this pleased me beyond words, even though her words stung.

“And yet, after weighing all the arguments, I dismissed that possibility.
